On Saturday afternoon, I hosted an open house on Mohawk Street. The home is an English garden, cozy and inviting. I brought an assortment of chocolates and stood by the fireplace — it was the best place to be on a blustery fall day.
I have a friend who really, really loves Mohawk Street. So much, in fact, that he’ll take any excuse to walk up and down the block, admiring the mansions and single-family homes. When Marty stopped by the open house near the end, I knew what he would ask.
“Can we walk Mohawk?”
And so, at three o’clock, I turned off the lights, locked the doors and buttoned my coat. We were off.
Mohawk Street is in Old Town, one of Chicago’s historic neighborhoods. The area is bounded on the north by Armitage Avenue, on the south by Division Street, on the east by Clark Street and on the west by Larrabee Street and Orleans Street. The tree-lined one-ways and Victorian homes make Old Town an enchanting place — Mohawk being one of its finest attributes.
As we walked, Marty and I pointed out our favorite homes. Each one is unique and intimidatingly beautiful — I can’t help but envision myself listing one of these mansions someday. And Marty can’t help but envision himself living in this particular mansion someday:
By the time we made it back to my car, it was getting dark outside. We drove off, ending our Mohawk afternoon with beers in Lincoln Square — but that is a neighborhood for a different day.
